Alor Setar, 10 September 2024 – The Office of the Personal Data Protection Commissioner (PPDP) has organized a Personal Data Protection Conference [Act 709] at the Raia Hotel & Convention Center Alor Setar in an effort to provide exposure and raise awareness to Data Users about the importance of regulating the processing of personal data in commercial transactions.
YBrs. Professor Dr. Mohd Nazri bin Kama, Commissioner for Personal Data Protection said, this conference is one of PPDP’s initiatives in increasing understanding and awareness of the importance of personal data protection among Data Users.
Professor Dr. Mohd Nazri bin Kama also said that the Office of the Personal Data Protection Commissioner is currently working towards strengthening the PPDP institution into a Commission in line with the wishes of YB Gobind Singh Deo, Digital Minister, to protect the personal data of Malaysians. The intention is to ensure that enforcement actions against data breach incidents can be strengthened.
The conference started with a Teh Tarik Session with the Commissioner and a sharing session by Mr. Mohamad Azrul bin Azmi, Assistant Commissioner, Data User Affairs Section with the topic Introduction of Act 709: Principles & Standards of Personal Data Protection. The second session of the partnership titled Personal Data Protection Act 2010: From the Enforcement Point of view was delivered by Dr. Muhammad Sufyan bin Basri, Assistant Commissioner, Monitoring Division.
This conference is the fifth conference organized by the Data User Affairs Section (HEPD). This conference was attended by approximately 150 participants involving registered and unregistered Data Users with PPDP, including from the banking, telecommunications, real estate, private schools, private higher education institutes, hospitality, pawn shops and moneylenders sectors.
